Potato gratin is a classic French comfort dish with a golden cheesy crust and a rich creamy texture. The potatoes are gently cooked in a flavorful cream sauce with garlic, rosemary, and spices, then baked until beautifully golden. Rosemary and garlic are always a perfect match with potatoes
4 medium potatoes
1.5 cups heavy cream 35% (360 ml)
1.5 cups milk (360 ml)
2 garlic cloves
1 sprig rosemary
2 bay leaves
salt to taste
a pinch of black pepper
a pinch of nutmeg
100 g grated cheese
butter for greasing the baking dish
Peel the potatoes and slice them into half-rounds about 0.5 cm thick
Bring the cream and milk to a boil
Add salt, spices, pressed garlic, rosemary, and bay leaves
Add the potatoes and simmer over low heat until partially cooked (~10 min). Do not overcook
Rub the baking dish with garlic and grease with butter
Arrange the potatoes in the dish and pour over about 2/3 of the cooking liquid
(the potatoes should not fully float in the liquid, but be covered about halfway)
Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 15 minutes
Remove from the oven, sprinkle with cheese, and bake for another 15 minutes until golden brown
